# Xiao Hong Shu (RedNote) title length and title rules

> **Quick answer:** A Xiao Hong Shu note title can be at most **20 characters, punctuation included**. Put the keyword and the hook in the first half, because the feed card is small. Avoid absolute claims such as 最 ("most"), 第一 ("number one") or 最佳 ("best") — China's Advertising Law restricts them — and never put links, WeChat IDs or phone numbers in a title.

## Specs at a glance

| | Limit or recommendation |
| --- | --- |
| Title length | 20 characters maximum, punctuation included |
| Body text (standard note) | 1,000 characters |
| Where the title shows | Under the cover on the feed card, and on the note page |
| Counts as characters | Every Chinese character and punctuation mark |

## The 20-character limit

The title field stops at 20 characters, and punctuation counts. How emoji and Latin letters are counted is not officially documented, so if you mix English, numbers and emoji, leave yourself a margin and check the counter in the app before you plan around an exact length.

Xiao Hong Shu has been testing long-form notes (长文) since July 2025, which allow longer body text — the 20-character title limit still applies.

## What makes a title work

- **Keyword first.** Xiao Hong Shu is a search engine as much as a feed; people search for things like 吉隆坡咖啡 ("Kuala Lumpur coffee"). The title and body are both read by search, and the title is what people see first.
- **Hook in the first ten or so characters.** On a narrow feed card the start of the title does the work.
- **Numbers and specifics.** "3 cafés", "under ¥50", "2026 guide" tell the reader what they get.
- **An emoji or two, not ten.** Emoji add colour but cost characters.

## What to avoid

- **Absolute and superlative claims.** Article 9 of China's Advertising Law bans terms such as 国家级 ("national-level"), 最高级 ("top-grade") and 最佳 ("best"), and regulators apply it to near-equivalents such as 最 and 第一. Brand accounts are held to it.
- **Moving people off the platform.** External links, QR codes, WeChat IDs and phone numbers in titles or notes lead to reduced reach, publishing limits and eventually bans.
- **Clickbait.** Community Convention 2.0 (January 2026) targets misleading titles and fake personas.

## Writing for Xiao Hong Shu from an English-speaking team

Write the title natively in Chinese rather than translating an English headline — a 20-character limit leaves no room for literal translation. Keep the English caption for Instagram and write a separate Chinese title and caption for Xiao Hong Shu.

## How Space Avocado helps

Space Avocado lets you keep one post and adapt the title, caption and hashtags per channel — English for Instagram, Chinese for Xiao Hong Shu and WeChat. When the post is due, the iOS app hands it to the Xiao Hong Shu app for you to check and publish. See [Xiao Hong Shu and WeChat planning](/rednote-wechat-planner).

## Frequently asked questions

### How many characters can a Xiao Hong Shu title have?

20 characters, and punctuation counts toward the limit.

### Do emoji count toward the Xiao Hong Shu title limit?

Yes, emoji take up space in the title, but exactly how emoji and Latin letters are counted is not officially documented. Leave a margin and check the in-app counter.

### Can I use words like "best" or "number one" in a Xiao Hong Shu title?

Avoid them. China's Advertising Law restricts absolute claims such as 最佳 ("best"), 最 ("most") and 第一 ("number one"), and brand content is expected to comply.

### How long can the body text of a Xiao Hong Shu note be?

1,000 characters for a standard note. Long-form notes, in testing since July 2025, allow more.
