WeChat Moments text length and folding
How much text a WeChat Moments post shows before it folds behind “Full text” (全文), and how to write captions that survive the fold.
Updated
Quick answer: WeChat Moments has no documented character limit for personal posts, but long text folds behind a "Full text" (全文) link after a few lines, and pasted text can fold even sooner. Put the message and any call to action in the first line or two. WeChat changes the folding behaviour without notice, so don't design around an exact character count.
Specs at a glance
| What to know | |
|---|---|
| Character limit (personal account) | None documented |
| Folding | Long text collapses behind 全文 ("Full text") after a few lines |
| Pasted text | Can collapse more aggressively than typed text |
| WeCom customer Moments | Reported limit of about 2,000 characters |
| Links | Article links and Mini Programs can be shared |
How folding works
In the Moments timeline, WeChat shows the first few lines of a caption and hides the rest behind 全文. Community tests over the years have measured the fold at around six or seven lines, and found that long pasted text can collapse to a single line — but WeChat does not document the thresholds and has changed them before. Treat anything below the first couple of lines as optional reading.
Writing captions that survive the fold
- Lead with the point. The first line should make sense on its own: the offer, the news, the question.
- Keep it short. Moments is a personal feed; a sentence or two often outperforms a paragraph.
- Type or lightly edit rather than pasting a long block, which can fold harder.
- One call to action, near the top — "Reply for the menu", "Link below".
- Write natively in Chinese for a Chinese audience rather than translating an English caption word for word.
Brand accounts and WeCom
Official Accounts cannot post to Moments, so brands post from personal accounts or WeCom customer Moments. WeCom caps what each customer sees at three company posts a day, and customers can mute a company's Moments, so fewer, better posts protect your reach.
How Space Avocado helps
Space Avocado lets you write the caption once and adapt it per channel — a short Chinese caption for WeChat, a longer English one for Instagram. When the post is due, the iOS app hands the text and photos to WeChat and you publish from your own account. See Xiao Hong Shu and WeChat planning.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a character limit for WeChat Moments?
No limit is documented for personal Moments posts. Long text folds behind "Full text" (全文), so the first lines matter most.
Why does my WeChat Moments text collapse to one line?
Long pasted text can be folded more aggressively than typed text. Shorten the caption, or type and lightly edit it instead of pasting a long block.
How many lines of a Moments post are visible?
A few lines before the 全文 fold. WeChat does not publish the exact threshold and has changed it over time, so keep the key message in the first line or two.
Can I put links in WeChat Moments posts?
You can share article links and Mini Programs to Moments. Brands posting through WeCom customer Moments can attach a link or a Mini Program to the post.
